Boulder County Residents
for Good Governance
ACCOUNTABILITY • TRANSPARENCY • RESULTS
From peaks to plains,
in Boulder County
every voice matters.
Boulder County is vibrant and diverse — and it’s time for our county government to reflect who we are.
Right now, just three at-large County Commissioners make decisions for more than 330,000 residents across every city, town, and rural area.

It’s time for a structure that ensures every community has a stronger, more local voice.

Boulder County
The Proposal:
5 districts
5 commissioners
Big Tent BoCo is a coalition of community members proposing to modernize Boulder County’s Board of Commissioners by expanding from three countywide seats to five commissioners elected by district. This change will:
-
Bring representation closer to home. District-based elections mean each commissioner is directly accountable to a smaller, more connected community — from our mountain towns to the plains.

-
Amplify diverse voices. With five districts, perspectives from across the county can be heard and reflected in decision-making.

-
Increase accessibility and responsiveness. Residents will have a commissioner who truly understands their area and can advocate for its unique priorities.

-
Strengthen participation and inclusion. More seats create more opportunities for local leadership and civic engagement — a reflection of Boulder County’s values.
Why Now?
It's time! Boulder County’s population has more than doubled since the 1970s, yet our system of representation has stayed the same. In fact, Boulder County has used a three-commissioner, at-large election model since the county was formed in 1861! Our goal is to expand the number of commissioners to ensure fairer, more balanced representation. This isn’t just about government structure — it’s about building a democracy that evolves with our community.
